Safe Riding with UBCO Electric Motorbikes: A Guide for Every Terrain

September is Motorcycle Safety Month here in New Zealand, and the perfect time to delve into safe riding practices. Whether you're cruising on city streets, conquering rugged trails, or navigating your farm, safety should never take a back seat when riding your UBCO 2x2.

In this article, we'll explore the key things you should do to ensure safety, no matter where your UBCO adventure takes you.

1. Gear Up for Success

The first rule of safe riding is to gear up properly. No matter the terrain, wearing the right protective gear is a non-negotiable. Start with a DOT-approved helmet that fits snugly but comfortably. Full-face helmets offer the best protection for your head and face. Additionally, invest in durable gloves, sturdy riding boots, and appropriate riding attire that covers your body.

Pro tip: Check the expiry date on your helmet. If it’s 5 years or older, it’s time for a new one.

2. Know Your Bike Inside Out

Before you hit the road, trail, or farm, take the time to familiarise yourself with your UBCO 2x2. Read the user manual thoroughly to understand the bike's features, controls, and maintenance requirements. This knowledge will enhance your riding experience and help you react quickly to any situation. Remember you can find your user manual any time in the Field Kit under your seat.

3. Always Ride Responsibly on the Road

When riding your 2x2 on the road, adhering to traffic rules is paramount. Obey speed limits, use turn signals, and always be aware of your surroundings. Defensive riding is essential, especially in areas with heavy traffic. Stay visible to other motorists by using your lights and positioning yourself appropriately within your lane.

4. Conquering Trails Safely

If you're an off-road enthusiast, UBCO electric motorbikes offer thrilling adventures. However, safety is equally important on rugged trails. Always wear appropriate off-road gear, including goggles to protect your eyes from debris. Ride within your skill level and scout the trail ahead for potential hazards. Be cautious on steep inclines, maintaining proper control and balance. Watch out for changes in terrain and do not ford any water deeper than the axles.

5. Navigating the Farm Terrain

For farm use, UBCO 2x2s are a versatile tool. When working on the farm, make sure your bike is loaded safely. We recommend you do not exceed 150kg including you and your cargo. Balance the load evenly and do not impede any moving parts on the 2x2. Remember to keep speeds manageable, especially when carrying cargo, and always look ahead for obstacles.

6. Regular Maintenance Checks

Safe riding isn't just about the ride itself; it starts with proper bike maintenance. Regularly inspect your UBCO 2x2 for any signs of wear or damage. Check tyre pressure, brakes, lights, and all electrical components before each ride. A well-maintained bike is more likely to respond reliably and safely in critical moments. Pro tip: Follow the pre-ride checklist in your user manual. It covers off all the important checks to make.

7. Continuous Learning and Training

No matter how experienced you are, there's always room to improve your riding skills. Consider enrolling in advanced riding courses specific to electric bikes. These courses will help you master techniques like proper braking, cornering, and emergency manoeuvres, making you a safer and more confident rider.
